JJ has been a staple for Chinese comfort food in Victoria for 20+ years. Although the portions may not be as large, the quality of the dishes is far superior to other Chinese food joints. The atmosphere is lively with simple but clean décor. If you are planning on dining in with a larger group they offer round tables with lazy susan’s making it a great spot for sharing.

Some of our favorite dishes on the wide ranging menu include the spicy ginger fried beef, Shanghai thick noodle chow mein, and the eggplant and mushroom in hot ginger sauce. Delivery is available through the local app Tutti with gluten free and vegetarian menu options available.

2. Halibut House

Another local favorite that has been in Victoria for many years is Halibut House – known for their quick service, consistent quality and reasonable prices. The atmosphere is unpretentious and cozy and the owner is sure to make you feel right at home.

3. Lotus Pond

Lotus Pond is another Victoria original opening its doors over 20 years ago. They offer vegan and vegetarian Chinese dishes and are a must try for Victoria foodies – vegetarian and meat eaters alike. 

Some must try dishes on the menu include the lemon mock chicken, turnip cakes, and the moo she shredded vegetables with pan cake wraps. Do not let the unassuming exterior deter you, this place is worth a visit!

4. The Cozy Place

The Cozy Place is the new kid on the block when it comes to Chinese restaurants in Victoria but is a must try if you are looking for a truly authentic Chinese meal. Opened by husband and wife from Guangzhou, China, they have mastered the Cantonese cooking experience with a fusion of freshness and spices blended together.

Try out their stir fried eggplant, potato and bean vegetarian dish (a Chinese favorite), or the sautéed pork belly with pepper and chilly.

5. Little Yunnan

Located in the heart of Chinatown this authentic Yunnanese restaurant is family owned and operated. Yunnan (a province in southwest China on the border of Vietnam and Thailand) is known for their sour and spicy multi ethnic dishes and Little Yunnan does not disappoint. 

They offer homemade and traditional specialties serving wonton soups, dumplings, rice dishes, noodle dishes, braised meats and a variety of sides. Try the traditional “Crossing the Bridge Rice Noodle” for a true taste of Yunnan.

6. Lin Heung

Since 1976 Lin Heung has been serving up all the classic western fusion Chinese dishes with a Szechuan and Cantonese flair. Generous portions and friendly staff, this is hangover comfort food at its finest. If you are dining alone or for takeout try one of the Combos – Combo B with sweet and sour pork, BBQ pork chow mein, and beef and broccoli is our favorite!

7. Hong Kong West

Located just outside of Oak Bay Hong Kong West is a small mom and pop shop serving up authentic, spicy, Sichuan style dishes. The décor is bare bones but the dishes are full of flavor. Try the spicy green beans, ma-po tofu, and the blackened chicken – our favorites on the menu.

8. Don Mee Seafood Restaurant

Victoria’s oldest dim sum spot, Don Mee Seafood Restaurant, opened its doors over 80 years ago and has long been a Chinatown staple. They offer the full dim sum experience with trolley carts and steaming dishes, drawing in tourists and locals alike for a taste of its old school cuisine.
